Marvin Wagner, City Councilman, District 5

Who am I?

I have been the District 5 Council Member for almost 8 years. I am a multi-generational military Veteran, raised by depression era parents.  I am a true baby boomer born just a few short years after World War II. My father and his four brothers all served In World War II. All but one returned.  My youngest uncle served in Korea. Both my brother and I are Vietnam era Veterans.  My youngest son was Commissioned into the Army Reserve.  All believe in service before self. We believe that service is not only our duty, but our responsibility and an honor.  I completed almost 37 years with the U.S. Government. I also worked as an Adjunct Professor of Accounting at Trident Technical College.  I taught all Accounting curriculum as well as Economics and Business Law throughout my 20-year tenure which ended in 2001.

I have personally dedicated my life to the United States as a Civil Servant and retired from the Department of Defense (DOD) in 2006.  My Civil service career began after I completed my active military service in 1972.  My first job was with the Internal Revenue Service for four years.  My career then took me back to the Department of Defense as the Senior Auditor at the Polaris Missile Facility; Supervisor of Shipbuilding as a Contracting Officer; and Charleston Air Force Base as Chief, Resource Management;  Since retirement I have operated a small tax and bookkeeping service which I have been working on a part time basis since leaving Internal Revenue Service.  In 2012, I began serving as a Charleston City Councilman for District 5 which is comprised of Outer West Ashley and all city residents on Johns Island.

My education consists of graduation from St. Andrews High School in 1967, two associate degrees, a Bachelor of Science degree from Charleston Southern in Accounting and Business Management and Masters Degree work, (Business Management) at Central Michigan and Webster University. I have completed numerous DOD schools and training courses.

I have received numerous work-related awards for quality and special acts and achievements. I have received Meritorious Civilian Service Awards from both the Department of the Navy and the Department of the Air Force.

Both parents and my brother, Bud, are now deceased. My wife and I will celebrate our 50th wedding anniversary in the next few months. We have 2 sons who have chosen law enforcement careers. Two grandchildren are in college and two are completing High School. Also 2 grand dogs.

I have been associated with many organizations over the years. These include Charleston Elks Cub, Chamber of Commerce, Charleston Jaycees, American Legion, Association of Military Comptrollers, Navy League of Charleston, West Ashley James Island Business Association, and other tax and accounting related organizations. Most are current but some i.e. Jaycees (age maximum of 35) are no longer active.
